How we create two retractable seating systems in one

Retractable seating systems create flexibility in a space – allowing it to be transformed into an auditorium or sporting arena in minutes. But what if the space is used for two very different types of event which require two different tiered seating arrangements? Here’s one of the many ways we can make this magic happen!

These retractable seating units we supplied to the team at Emirates Arena in Glasgow have two different set ups. The team can open out every row to create a rake of seating, or they can create a shorter, steeper rake by only opening every other row in what we refer to as a “double stacked” formation.

For athletics, the double stacked formation is used, giving excellent sightlines to the running track. For sports with smaller playing areas, such as netball or judo, the full set of seating rows can be opened out to create an exciting arena with close-up views of the action.

What Are the Applications of This?

Sport – Arranging seating to work around different court or arena sizes for different sports, as is the case here.

Theatres & Arenas – Changing between a longer, lower rakes for an end stage set up and shorter, steeper rakes for use in an in-the-round configuration. The double stacked formation also be appropriate for dance events, where the steep rake creates good sightlines to the dancers’ feet.

What’s the Catch?

Of course, having only every other row of seating open creates an issue in the aisle – how do you accommodate two different stairways? We supplied stair modules which overtop the basic structure of the seating system and are simply clamped into place when the rows are double stacked.
